NEW PROJECT: The International School of Dramatic Corporeal Mime – The Body and Theatricality, the Art of Corporeal Mime

An actor’s training comprises a mastery of immobility as much as a mastery of movement. Conscious of the artificiality of the stage, the actor who has committed themselves to the authorship of new forms of dramatic writing must acquire the necessary foundations for making their body the stage’s protagonist.

Total length: 60hrs

  • From 27th February to 24th March 2023 (5 days – 36hrs/week)
  • From 6th to 24st March 2023 (3 weeks – 10 hours/week)

Location of training: Montreuil 93100 (Ile-de-France)
Individual cost: 910€
Supported fee: 1380€
The workshop split up in two parts:
- An initial intensive (30hr) week, with 6 hours training per day,

- Followed by six weeks where interns will be integrated into the professional class for 10 hours each week. This second package aims to give the AFDAS interns the opportunity to experience the total immersion in a class which dedicates itself to studying the art of corporeal mime for a whole year, and by this experience, allows them to advance in their own technique and apply it in practice. Each intern will be coached by a student who is currently training as a Mime Teacher, in a brand new Level 3 diploma programme.

General Information

Introduction to the workshop

Professional profile of interns:
Dramatic Corporeal Mime is a theatrical pedagogy whose aims lie in actors’ training. Its originality is useful to artists from diverse backgrounds, coming from dance, theatre, music, puppetry, clowning, and circus.

Professional requirements and experiences of interns:
There are no necessary prerequisites to take part in the workshop, which remains open to professional performers, and indeed anyone who wishes to acquire training in Dramatic Corporeal Mime, as well as those who would like a greater breadth of physical movement.

Pedagogical objective: This ambitious project, which brings us to the heart of theatricality, takes place during the workshop through the study of the fundamentals of Corporeal Mime. Here movement and its articulation takes forms which are simultaneously significant and abstract. The density of attitude and gesture gives the body in movement a dimension which contributes to the theatrical, poetic, dramatic and abstract.
The workshop allows us to analyse movement unique to this art, and to understand the principles of articulation in order to rarefy and amplify movement. Studying counterweights and physical performance allows us to play the struggle, the effort which the body throws itself against.

Particular attention is paid to rhythm. Rhythm of form, but also and especially the rhythm of the body in space. All these rhythms are examined through the study of the principles, the dynamic figures, and extracts of the unique repertoire of Etienne Decroux’s Corporeal Mime.
