GESTURAL AND BURLESQUE THEATRE
The burlesque actor does not seek to make people laugh.
Burlesque belongs to the realm of misunderstanding, clumsiness, bad luck, desire, failure, complaint, or even boasting.
Burlesque is intimately linked to humans, who often want, even if they do not admit it, to be noticed, considered, admired.
From tenderness to meanness, from subtle and discreet poetry to huge and sufficient buffoonery, there is a whole range of play for the burlesque character who, at every moment, plays his life.

Work phases
1/ TECHNIQUE
In the work, one must be very technical while animating the body with desire, frustration, joy, sadness, anger, fear…
2/ IMPROVISATIONS AND SITUATIONS:
The “nature” of the actor, his comic resources, his imagination and creativity. What are the situations conducive to the development of burlesque?
3/ STYLE:
The spirit of tragedy and melodrama in burlesque.Jean-Claude Cotillard
With the company that bears his name, Jean-Claude Cotillard has written, directed and acted in visual theater plays (All men are born EGO, Trekking, Take care of me!, Life in Pink, Work, End of Series, and most recently Love at 15:37). He has directed Pierre Notte, Daniel Pennac, the clowns Les Cousins, Jean-Paul Farré… He has received two Molières: the Molière for Best Show (and nomination for Best Company) for Me too, I am Catherine Deneuve (Pierre Notte), and the Molière for Best Musical Show for The Twelve Pianos of Hercules (Jean-Paul Farré). As a pedagogue, he teaches physical work, improvisation, and especially burlesque. He leads workshops on gestural and burlesque theater all over the world. In France, he taught at the Conservatory of Orleans, then at the ESAD (Higher School of Dramatic Art of Paris). He was appointed director of this school from 2003 to 2013. The school became one of the eleven French national schools in 2008 and in which he created in 2011 the first “mime and gesture arts” class in a national school. He also taught at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art in Paris, the National Center for Circus Arts in Chalons-en-Champagne, and with the clowns of Rire Medecin.

Presentation of the pedagogical module conducted at EIMCD
Working with masks is not just about discovering or deepening a technique of acting. Our goal in this workshop is rather to accompany the actor-mime-dancer in the fundamentals of dramatic expression, in the realm of silence where the body is the producer of the imaginary. To achieve this, we will alternate physical preparation and masked improvisation work in order to increase the potentialities of the actor-creator. Masks are references of the level of play, designed to be kept once the mask is removed. We will start our approach to masked play with the discovery of the neutral mask, or impersonal mask, which is the fundamental mask, that of balance and calmness. It allows the actor to establish a available body. It also develops the relationship to space and sensitizes to the fundamental laws of movement. Under this mask, the student learns to enlarge gestures and attitudes and discovers the dramatic force of this collective body that is the chorus which structures the space. We will simultaneously approach the expressive masks which are infinite in number and will work for this stage mainly on the full masks, in wood, from the tradition of Balinese topeng. These masks offer a varied human typology (the young girl, the king, the princess, the old man, the prime minister…) and thus allow the actor-mime-dancer to discover new body circuits, far from our identity determinisms (sex, age, character). Like the character, these large masks have all their complexity. They guide the actor.
