Mime and Creation

From april 25th to 29th, 2022 (25h) - 390 €

Creation - or how to tickle the muses … or the creative act in its entirety. How to create, starting from given constraints, how the constraints make it possible to target and move forward, how to apprehend a theme, to make it one’s own while giving its personal touch … all while going through the difficult exercise of improvisation and half - improvisations.

The purpose of the internship is to give participants the opportunity to propose the premises of a creation.

La formation permettra de connaître les bases et la spécificité de la technique développée par le Maître Français, permettant aux participants de se confronter aux exigences d’une théâtralité où mouvement, rythme, attitude seront les éléments fondateurs du langage scénique. Le travail portera sur l’Initiation à une analyse du mouvement qui permet une nouvelle prise de conscience du jeu scénique à travers l’étude des principes fondamentaux du mime corporel dramatique:

The training will allow to know the bases and the specificity of the technique developed by the French Master, allowing the participants to confront their theatrical knowlege, where movement, rhythm, attitude will be the basic elements of the stage language. The work will focus on Initiation into a movement analysis which allows a new awareness of scenic play through the study of the fundamental principles of corporal dramatic mime:

  • ,Articulation et segmentation of the actor’s body,
  • Work on the dynamics of movement (tension - relaxation, rhythm and dynamo-rhythms, muscular comedy and counter-weight),
  • Study of small sequences (dynamic figures) to confront a quality of movement where the interpretation is carried by form and rhythm of the actor’s body,
  • How to desplacement the actor’s body on stage, through the study of stylized steps and character steps,
  • Improvisation themes and half - improvisations to confront different playing situations.

MIME WORKSHOP Weekend (WE)

DURING THE MONTH OF MAY 2022

The Children of Paradise, Mime and Narration - Week end (WE)

14th and 15th of May 2022 (10hrs) ­ 160 €

The workshop provides an insight into the different aesthetics of the Art of Mime, departing from the studies made by Etienne Decroux in the 1930s, which developed the base of the Marche Sur Place, and the work on fixed points.

We take a look at the myths of mime evident in the film ‘Les Enfants du Paradis,’ where several characters develop from a particular and defined gesture.

This workshop seeks to give participants the opportunity to discover the physical richness and theatricality akin to this art form.

The workshop functions as an introduction to the Dramatic Corporeal Mime of Etienne Decroux - his analysis of movement, and his philosophical thought - through a study of the art’s fundamental principles.
  • Work on the fundamental principles of corporeal mime

  • Work on displacement of the body through space (character walks)
  • Physical segmentation and work on rhythm through studied characters

General workshop informations:

Professional profile of trainees :  Corporeal Dramatic Mime being at the crossroads of disciplines is aimed at a heterogeneous audience coming from both dance, theatre, music, puppetry, circus, clown, graphic animation or drawing.

Prerequisites and professional experience of trainees: The workshop, which requires no prerequisites, is open to professionals of the spectacle as to any person driven by the desire to acquire a training in Dramatic Corporel Mime and more generally to those who feel the need to obtain a greater bodily ease.

Pedagogical objective: This ambitious project, which brings us back to the sources of theatricality, passes, during this course, by the study of the fundamentals of Corporel Dramatique Mime. Here the movement, by its articulation, takes forms that are both meaningful and abstract. The attitude and the gesture by their density, give to this body in motion a scenic dimension where poetry, drama, abstraction rub shoulders. The course will allow to explore the analysis of the movement specific to this art, to understand these principles of articulation in order to be able to rarefy and amplify the movement.
To study the counterweights and the muscular comedy allowing us to show the struggle, the effort of a body that opposes, resists. Body that becomes metaphorical when the action is transposed from the material sphere to the moral sphere. Particular attention will be devoted to rhythm. Rhythm of form but also and especially rhythm of the movement of the body in space. All these themes will be treated during the study of principles, dynamic figures, excerpts of pieces specific to the repertoire of Étienne Decroux’s Mime Corporel Dramatique.

The workshop is divided into two parts:
- A first week, intense (30 hours), at a rate of 6 hours per day,
- followed by three weeks in which trainees will be integrated into the professional class at the rate of 10 hours per week. This second part aims to give the opportunity to the trainee AFDAS to confront in total immersion a class that dedicates itself throughout the school year to the learning of the Art of Dramatic Corporal Mime and, to enable them through this confrontation to progress better in their learning, caught up by an entire class and pushed towards mastery. Thus the new achievements are immediately anchored and implemented. Each professional will be coached by a student in Mime Trainer training, any new level III - RNCP diploma.

Planning a typical day
The typical day of the first session, which takes place over 5 days (first part), will be punctuated by twice 3 hours of lessons:
- 3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon.

The mornings, will be first of all dedicated to a bodily conditioning followed by the learning of the fundamental principles essential and proper to the Dramatic Corporal Mime of Étienne Decroux.

The afternoons, will be used to apply these fundamentals, putting them at the service of the expression and the dramatic context, thus allowing the discovery of dynamic figures or excerpts from the repertoire of Etienne Decroux. The days will end with moments of improvisation (theme of improvisation that will evolve throughout the training) that will allow the participants to appropriate the technique by investing it and using it in a well defined context (Solo, Duo or group).

The model day of the second session, which takes place over 3 weeks (second part), will be punctuated by lessons of 2 hours and a half to 3 hours. These lessons are taught with the same pedagogical structure.
